Hi guys, I want to move this topic off E-mail and into a forum where it belongs.

Today we were called by Scarborough Security to let us know that we had visitors in our house. At first we did not understand, I thought they were calling to tell us about human intruders, because the house was completely locked up when I left it on Friday afternoon. "OH NO" they said, "NOT HUMANS, BABOONS." The baboons were able to 'jimmy' our sliding folding doors enough so they became unlocked and they helped themselves to the contents of our refrigerater and pantry. When we arrived this afternoon, we found feces and urine all over our pantry and kitchen, and had lost several hundred rands worth of staples and groceries. We cleaned up the poop and bagged it along with the food, and had to cart it away in the back of our car and endure the stench in our drive over the mountain. We cannot leave garbage at the curb: our garbage bins are merely decorative at this point. Every time we put anything in them, (even if there is not food involved) we have to clean it all off the driveway before we enter our home.

I am concerned for several reasons. We did not do anything 'wrong' to entice these animals, except have a home here. Our house doors and winders were locked and we were not at home. We have dogs and toddler-aged children. If these baboons had broken into our locked house when the animals and children were there, we could have had a serious tragedy. Had this been human intruders, we would have some recourse. But now we are left with a feces-smeared kitchen, and a big stinky sticky mess.

The thing is that we do the baboons no favors by trying to cohabitate with them. There is nothing for them here, but what they can rob and pillage from our homes. Our pantry was stocked full of staples: seeds, oats, raisins, cranberries. The baboons left these things behind and went for the junk: they ate oreo biscuits, mike and ikes candy, late harvest wine, and potato chips. They don't want baboon food: they want people food. This cannot be good for them (I know, I know, not good for us either). Don't know about you, but we invested several million rands in our property, and we believe we should be able to protect our home from this kind of vandalism.

The people on this forum have many good ideas that put together may have a chance at placing these animals in a safer and healthier habitat, and stop the unnecessary terrorizing of the people in all the communities in the cape point. Isn't it time we bring our conversations and clever musings to a close and place some of these ideas on a referendum ballot and get on with some practical solutions before someone is seriously injured, and before another beloved pet is attacked?

PS We want to express our gratitude for the caring neighbors who alerted Scarborough Security so they might give us a call and alert us to the mess. Bless you all. The Loch Family
