Letter from Taryn Blyth:

Hi Graham

I am a committee member of Friends of the Dog Walkers, an organisation which was formed to negotiate with San Parks over access for dogs to TMNP. We have had quite a lot of success in the past in retaining the rights which Capetonians have always enjoyed as far as being able to take their dogs with them to our local beaches and up into the mountains.

Currently we are in negotiations over the new Environmental Management Plan for people walking with dogs in the park. This means that regulations and etiquette governing the access of families or individuals with dogs is being reviewed and proposed at the moment. The company "The Nature Conservation Corporation" has been chosen to head up this process and we (FDW) had our first meeting with them on Teusday.

One worrying thing which came out of the meeting was that SANParks is again proposing closing Schusterskraal to dogs. This was a great surprise to us after Gavin Bell (manager of Southern Section TMNP) assured myself and FDW that their previous attempt to do this a few years ago was a mistake and that Scarborough residents need not fear this area being closed to dogs in the future. If such a proposal goes ahead, it would mean that Scarborough residents would no longer be able to walk through Schusterskraal and familes with dogs would not be able to play on the field as they do at the moment. The area would be left to those occasional braaiers (not local residents) who seem to have no respect for the environment and who abuse and litter the area.

I would ask that you please pass this information on to all Scarborough residents, particularly those who regularly walk their dogs through Schusterskraal. Currently the Nature Conservation Corporation is taking a register of interested and affected parties who will then be sent the draft EMP for comment when it is brought out. On their website www.natureconservation.co.za there is a form to fill out in order to register. Comments can be made at the same time, so I urge local dog walkers to put in a word of disapproval over the proposed closing of Schusterskraal to people with dogs. I would also encourage people to register with Friends of the Dog Walkers which you will find under the website www.crag.org.za so that we can encorporate as many peoples' views as possible in our negotiations.

Thanks
Taryn Blyth
